Attracting garden birds is not difficult. Of course the type of birds you can expect to attract depends on your geographic area. You can find information about this in libraries or in bird-watching magazines, as well as online. It will also depend upon the time of year. You can look for information about the bird migration routes that some kinds of birds take to get to their summer or winter residence. This way, at certain times of year you may be able to attract birds that you would not usually see in your area.

Birds need water. This is highly important. A garden bird bath or a pool, no matter the size or the material, would quickly attract many birds. If you have a large pond and live in a quiet area you may even see wild ducks and geese landing in your garden. If you have only a small bird bath, raise it up to keep the smaller birds safe from cats.

If you can also arrange a place where you can put out food, bird seeds, bread or anything else they might like, that would increase the number of birds in your garden. Again you should make this raised up high off the ground. Some birds will peck at seeds hanging in a net. Others prefer a birdhouse with a platform that they can land on. Different bird species prefer different foods so try to find information on what will attract the birds that are found in your area. Sunflower seeds are popular with most birds but it is best to provide variety.

You could also increase the vegetation in your garden by planting more trees and bushes. It may be that a bird that is in your area likes a certain type of berry. In that case you can provide those berries by growing them in your garden.

These are the positive steps that you can take to attract garden birds. The second step is to keep away from the garden all the things that might scare or disturb birds. Cats are a danger but birds will also be scared by dogs in neighbor gardens, especially if they are noisy. If one neighbor has a dog, set your birdhouse on the opposite side of your garden, or in the front if the dog is usually out back.

Also, you should know that some bird species do not get along with each other, so that certain birds might avoid your garden because there is another species in it. Some will also stay away if you have children and the noise is too loud, and others will not be comfortable if your garden is very bare. So, knowing their nature and preferences can be a decisive factor in attracting garden birds to your garden.
