Building a Chicken Coop

When you begin your new adventure in building a chicken coop it could become very costly if you are not sure what you are doing. So what are the proper tools you ask?  The proper tool means one thing to me, and that is a plan!  A plan of how, where and what you are about to begin building. Building chicken coops does not require fancy, expensive tools or elaborate plans.  No one should have to spend an excessive amount in order to house their new pets, nor run back and forth to the hardware store to purchase a new set of tools every ten minutes.  A plan is what you need and a plan is what will help you in the long run have a very productive coop.  Building a Chicken coop has been done, and it’s been done well and very effectively without breaking the bank or your back!

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR?

Things you should look for or consider before beginning building a chicken coop.

Layout:  You shouldn’t have to repair your coop all the time, and you certainly do not want to see your hard earned money being dropped into it over and over again, so a good layout right out of the gate is very important.  Consider things like:

Cleaning.  Slope the floors for an effortless clean up.

How will the doors and windows open, are they placed in the most useful place to allow in the proper amount of daily sunlight?

Location.

Protection:  Protection is a must when building chicken coops.  Do you have a good plan so your coop is protected at all hours of the day from predators?  One very important key factor in building chicken coops is protection.  Be sure to protect them not only from predators but themselves also.

Ventilation:  The goal is for farm fresh, healthier eggs, right?  Then ventilation is key!  With the proper ventilation, not only your chickens will be happier and healthier but you will most certainly be happier!

Light Source:  Every coop should have some sort of lighting source, whether you plan to build electric into the coop, or simply use battery operated sources, you must also know that chicken require natural sunlight or an equivalent to, so please keep that in mind when planning out the lighting source you are choosing.

Looks:  Maybe you don’t really care what your coop looks like, and maybe that’s perfectly fine for your area, but if you have neighbors is very nice to take them into consideration.  They are more likely to enjoy the structure if it’s pleasant to look at.  This does not mean building the Mansion of all chicken coops in your backyard, but a simply paint job may be enough to do the trick.

Are you ready?  Do you have your proper tools in place?  Did you plan out a great game plan, have you done enough research to know what goes into a chicken coop?  Great!  Happy egg-laying!
