Urinary tract infection in cats
Continuing on from the last post, urinary tract infection is another common cat health problem. Urinary tract infection is most common in male cats that have not been neutered, although females can suffer from this problem as well. When a cat suddenly stops going to his litter box, this problem is very often the cause. Another symptom is if the cat’s urine starts to smell very strong. If you suspect that your cat may be affected, you should take him to the vet. Your veterinarian can treat it easily with medication, and make recommendations to help prevent this in the future.
Feline leukemia
In the fairly recent past, feline leukemia was the biggest cause of death in cats. Fortunately, however, these days there are vaccines available that can prevent the disease, which is caused by a virus. There is no treatment once a cat falls sick. Your cat will need to be given the shot before he or she is exposed. Even though death doesn’t happen immediately, cats that are affected by feline leukemia normally do not have a long life span. If you know your cat has feline leukemia, you should never allow other cats around him, as the virus is highly contagious. This means keeping him indoors and only ever taking him out on a leash.
To protect your cat from these and other common cat health problems, you should always make sure that you take him to the veterinarian for his regular check ups. If you keep him up to date on his vaccinations, he should lead a healthy and productive life. Although some health problems cannot be avoided, most of them can. If you are just starting out with a kitten and you live in a city apartment, keeping him indoors will protect him from a majority of health problems as well as keeping him safe from traffic. If your cat is an outdoor cat, regular visits to the veterinarian will keep him healthy. As long as you follow all of your veterinarian’s recommendations, urinary tract infection in cats and even feline leukemia can be prevented, and your cat should be your companion for years to come.
