In the early 1900’s horses were still used as a means of transportation and farm labor by much of the world. As the century progressed, their ‘usefullness’ became somewhat obsolete. But horse lovers everywhere continue to find great pleasure in using horses now for sports.

The best known horse sport is racing. The Thoroughbred breed is prized for it’s long, smooth muscles and deep chest. They are bred for speed. This is a sport people love to watch as the average person is much too large to be a jockey. Seabiscuit was so beloved and famous as a race horse that even in modern times, his story is still being made into movies.

Jumping is another horse sport that’s very competitive all over the world. It’s divided into two types of categories - show jumping and hunter. With show jumping, it’s pretty simple who wins - the horse with the least jumps knocked down and the fastest time. Hunter competition is a judged class. Style, movement and how the horse folds his legs while jumping are taken into consideration. [spin]Both of these types of classes have competitions for novices to advanced professionals|Any rider, from novice beginner to highly advanced professionals, can find a jumping class to compete in[spin].

One of the oldest forms of horse training is dressage with it’s roots back to the days of ancient Greece. Usually the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of horses and dressage are the Lippizaner Stallions made famous by being saved by General George Patton during WWII. The graceful movements are seemingly effortless although it can take up to 10 years to train a horse to the highest levels. dressage competitions are popular throughout the world with any breed of horse eligible. The warmblood breeds developed in Europe have locked up the top placings at the Grand Prix levels. However, there is fierce competition from all breeds at the lower levels and especially for youths.

Western style riding evokes images of Cowboys and Indians. The US has most of the stock type horses and competitions which range from roping, cattle work, to highly pampered show horses. Quarter horses, Appaloosas and Paints are the breeds dominating this type of riding. While recreational riding is the most popular thing to do, there are still plenty of ranches that use horses for work.

Many people love to watch horse competitions, but they are still outnumbered by those who simply love owning a horse and just going for trail rides - even if it’s just on the side of a road. Heck, I know people who just want a horse in their pasture to look at, groom and love.

Horse riding is great exercise no matter which style of riding you prefer. Having an animal as noble as a horse for your training partner - it doesn’t get any better than that!

Giardiasis has increasingly become a health concern, and is one of the most common parasites found in North America. You can have this parasite and not even know it. It is most often found in canines through a fecal sample taken to your vet but on occasion needs to be retested since the giardia oocysts are shed intermittently. Giardia is acquired by dogs from drinking water contaminated with oocysts (usually from water puddles, ponds, and streams that are contaminated).

The symptom is usually diarrhea which can cause weight loss and dehydration. In small breed puppies this can be fatal as they can become lethargic which leads to hypoglycemia, when the outbreak is severe.

It is contagious to humans and can be spread through unsanitary conditions. This flagellated protozoan parasite colonizes, attaches to the small intestine, and reproduces while stealing nutrients from its host. When it is done inside it is expelled in the form of a cyst through the feces which can survive almost a month in extreme weather.

This can be treated in a couple ways. Panicure for 5 days seems to be the most successful but you can also use high doses of flagyl for 7 days as a secondary option. Flagyl can cause nausea, upset stomach, neurological problems and panicure is fatal if dosed incorrectly so seek veterinary assistance when caring for your pet. Because the cysts are hardy and are expelled from the body it is important to wash your pet a few days into the treatment.

Also, be very careful to sanitize with boiled water and bleach any place the animal defecates. Washing bedding can’t hurt anything either. Make sure to was your hands thoroughly every time after handling your pet to protect yourself from being contaminated. You need to be concerned about dog health, and your own health.

Fort Dogde does provide a giardia vaccine that has been around 8 years but because treatment is uncomplicated and giardia is not usually life threatening not many vets carry this. The vaccine does not prevent giardia but it is used to decrease the amount of cysts shed from the host.

When trying to rid giardia from a kennel environment the vaccine is more effective than if you are just trying to treat a couple dogs.

Giant Schnauzer puppies can make a great addition to your family but you must teach it how to act if you want it to be a good dog when it grows up. The best time for behaviour training is when it is still a puppy, and that should start the moment you get it home. The best ways to teach a puppy the difference between right and wrong, no matter what breed it is, is to praise it when it does good and punish it when it does things that are bad. Beyond that, you must remain consistent as puppies learn best through repetition. Just remember that behaviour training your giant Schnauzer puppy is supposed to be a fun time for it will only be a puppy once.

Find out more about the best ways to house train your puppy
housebreaking tips for puppies housetraining puppies tips for potty training dogs

The best way to behaviour train your giant Schnauzer puppy is to give it lots of praise when it does things you deem as good. If it goes to the bathroom outdoors, for instance, pet it and say well done in a warm, enthusiastic tone. Hug your dog and teach it that every time it does something that’s acceptable, it’s going to get the same type of love and affection. This will in the course of time teach your new giant Schnauzer puppy that good behaviour prompts this type of attention.

in much the same way. Naturally, this doesn’t mean you should hit it or abuse it. Never hit a puppy. Instead, to behaviour train your giant Schnauzer puppy, and to teach it the difference between right and wrong, make a loud noise when it does something unacceptable. For example, or does the toilet on your nice new carpet, say no in a loud voice or slap a magazine or newspaper against your hand. In the course of time, just as the praise taught it to go good, it will learn that bad behaviour results in the negative experience of the loud noise, thus teaching it that good behaviour is preferable.

Behaviour training your giant Schnauzer puppy is meant to be fun, so have fun with it. You are mainly teaching your new dog how to be a good addition to your family. Just remember that even though your giant Schnauzer will grow larger, it will still be a puppy mentally so [spin[maintain|keep up[/spin] the training, remain consistent and know that, with enough time, patience, love and affection, your dog will grow into a healthy, good dog that will be an integral part of your family for a long time to come.

No two dogs are the same, so if you’re toying with the idea of shopping around for a puppy for sale and bringing the four-legged wonder into your home, then you have to do your homework! Dog breed information can be found in a number of places. We’ve got some great tips that will help you choose the perfect pet, such as a miniature Poodle.

Vets are a reliable source of dog breed information. They can tell you the pros and cons of a variety of breeds and the level of care involved with each. Many breeds, such as French poodles, Labrador and Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds have clubs. A club or dog group such as these will definitely be a wealth of information. Your personality will dictate the kind of dog that appeals to you. If you’re an exercise buff, then you’ll want an active dog. If you’re affectionate and have limited living space, then perhaps one from a toy group would be a good choice. Teacup poodles are adorable. A clean freak would definitely not choose a long haired dog that sheds.

Once you have collected all the data you need to work out your living space so you know how much space you have available for a dog. Also, is your yard big enough and is it fenced securely? The size of dog you hope to get will be directly related to the amount of room you have available. You also need to way up how much time you can devote to your new dog. Many breeds get very attached to their owner and its this attachment that causes them to play up when they are not with their master. Another thing you need to think about is exercise you will be able to give your dog. If you go jogging every day then great, you can choose a breed that needs plenty of activity such as a boxer.

A dog can cost a lot of money and you should be aware of this fact. Apart from the cost of the dog itself, which can run to thousands of dollars for a purebred, you will have to meet the cost of the dogs diet, grooming, dental and hygiene products and of course vet fees. It is often the vet fees that catch new dog owners off guard. Dogs need shots, spaying and neutering as standard and then there is any vet bills from accidents or illnesses. You should give serious thought to some pet insurance which can cost as little as $10 a month and takes away all the worry of veterinarian costs. Always compare pet insurance before signing up with anyone.

An adorable puppy, such as a toy Poodle, can be hard to resist, but you should look for accurate dog breed information before you commit to becoming a pet owner. If you don’t choose a dog that fits into your life, neither you nor your pet will be happy. By doing your homework, you’ll get a four legged friend for life.

A result of breeding between the Bulldogs and the Mastiffs, the Bullmastiff inherited from the latter its stature and body, being at the same time fast and active just like Bulldogs. Gentle, loyal, a good companion and play mate for children, he still remains and excellent guard dog.

The main reason this breed was created is the mixture of guardian abilities with courage, seeking to get a dog faster than the Mastiff that could protect hunting guards and can also help capturing and immobilizing illegal hunters. Actually the Bullmastiff was once called the Gamekeeper’s Night Dog, which means the night dog of the hunting guard.

It appears that perfecting the breed took some time – almost 30 years – its creator admitting the fact that he started with settling the standards, and only then achieving the correct mixture. Soon, the Bullmastiff gained fans all over the world and it was preferred to Mastiff because he was smaller, easier to control and to raise.

The Bullmastiff, a dog that is not naturally violent, must not be abused in any way. He feels at his best next to a master that has lots of patience. In society he is reasonably quiet and relaxed, assuming he has been brought into contact with people since he was a puppy. When he is still a puppy he must grow used to petting and to strangers.

Equipped for guarding, the Bullmastiff has some incredibly quick reactions and he will protect his owner even with his life. In family he is a pleasing friend, loving and patient with little children. Playful, he will love children and let them do anything to him without fighting back. He needs wide spaces to exercise and run freely.

It is absolutely essential the Bullmastiff is house trained when still a puppy. Check this article out dog crate train to learn more about the best housetraining methods.

Here are some of the basics about the West Highland White Terrier also known as Westies:

Category: Terrier
Living Environment: indoors (highly recommended); outdoors (fenced yard)

Coat: about two-inch coarse and wiry outer coat and soft, dense, and furry undercoat
Color: white

Height: between 10 and 12 inches

Weight: between 13 and 22 pounds

Temperament:
Naturally,
•	they like to bark and dig
•	they are not as willful as most terriers
•	they love companionship

When properly trained
•	they can become fairly friendly towards strangers
•	they develop close affinity with behaved children
•	they love to chase cats but they do not hurt them
•	they can become a very good watch dog
•	they can become very lively

Breeders should take note of the following health issues:
• Chronic skin problems
• Perthe’s disease (hip problems)
• Jawbone calcification
• Cranio mandibular osteopathy (lion jaw)
• Patella luxation, a disorder in the kneecap
• Liver ailments
• Deafness
• Congenital heart disease

Care and Exercise:
•	Their coat should be brushed regularly using a brush with stiff bristles.
•	They should bathe only when necessary.
•	Their whole coat should be trimmed every four months.
•	The fur on the eyes and ears should be trimmed using blunt-nose scissors.
•	They need regular sessions of play and/or walk.

Origin/History:

They share the same lineage with Cairns and Scotties (from Skye terriers), and even with the Dandies. This trio was developed in the Isle of Skye, which is one of the islands in Scotland. It was noted that white whelps were chosen from the wiry-coated Cairns, Scotties, and Dandies to produce the variety that were known as Poltalloch terriers.

History records mentioned that around 1620, King James 1 of England requested some small white dogs from Argyleshire in Scotland. Colonel Malcolm, who was considered as the originator of Poltalloch terriers, that are very similar to the Westies of today, accidentally shot his terrier (a dark one). From then on he vowed to have only white terriers.

In the 19th century, terriers that were very similar to the Westies were known as Roseneath terriers in honor of Duke of Argyll’s interest and patronage of this breed. Roseneath was the name of his estate at Dumbartonshire.

In the first-ever dog show that were organized in the late 1800s, the Westies were called as White Scottish terriers. In 1904, they were classified under the name West Highland White terriers.

During the mid-1900s, breeders of the Cairns in Argyll, Scotland selected white puppies from the stock and interbreed some to obtain white Cairns. However, in 1917, the American Kennel Club ruled that Cairns could be listed if they have the Westies’ lineage.

Of course every puppy dog, no matter the breed should be properly house trained. Find out about the best methods

Just like potty training a child, house training a puppy requires patience, consistency and time. Did we mention patience? Unfortunately, puppies do not come endowed with an innate sense of where the right place to go to the bathroom is. They simply know that when they have an urge, it is time to relieve themselves. It is your job, as the intelligent and caring dog owner, to teach your dog the proper place to potty. This is best done without any anger, frustration or drama on your part. By s[pin]staying|remaining[/spin] calm and being consistent, house training your puppy may turn out to be a brief process with a happy ending.

a Puppy:
There are a number of methods that you can use for housetraining your puppy. The first is to train him indoors, and slowly work your way outside. This is done by confining your puppy to a particular area of the house, preferably a room that has a hard, easy to clean floor. Put some papers or a training pad on the floor of that room. Whenever you see your pup showing his “I have to go” signs, which may include sniffing the ground and running in circles, place the puppy on the papers where you want him to go. Each time he potties in the designated location, praise him with a “good dog.” When your puppy gets the hang of the papers or pads, move them closer to the door. Eventually your pup will associate the urge to potty with the need to go outside. Success is yours.

Another very effective way to house train your puppy is to use a crate. This has become a popular approach to house training a puppy in recent years for a number of reasons. For starters, confining your puppy to the crate will not only save your home and carpet when you are not around to watch your pup, it will also give your dog a safe place to hang out when you’re not available to him. It will also teach your puppy that when he feels the urge to “do his business,” he can hold the urge until he gets to the appropriate location. You see, most dogs will not eliminate in the same place that they sleep. So chances are good that your pup will do his absolute best not to soil his crate while he is inside. This is probably why house training a puppy using this method will often result in fewer accidents in the long run.

House training a puppy can be a challenge, but it is far from impossible. With consistent instruction on where he is to go, and plenty of praise when he makes the good choice, your little pup will get the house training down in no time at all.

There isn’t any dog breed that has absolutely no genetic defects. Although the Siberian Husky has fewer health problems than any other dog breed. While you should keep an eye out for several Siberian Husky health problems, in general the Siberian Husky has good health and temperament.

The Siberian Husky Club of American or SHCA has monitored all potential genetic problems and they have taken positive action in order to ensure the general health and well being of the breed. Since the founding of the SHCA in 1965 it has been tasked with being aware of genetic problems and alerting breeders before the defects have a chance to spread. For the Siberian Husky the SHCA has identified the two greatest areas of concern as canine hip dysphasia and inheritable eye disease. To help your dog live a long, healthy life and to avoid these conditions you need to practice proper care and monitoring.
Hip dysphasia is a problem in which the hip joint at the head of the thighbone doesn’t fit properly into the joint socket. This condition isn’t typically present when a puppy is born, rather it will develop within the dog’s first two years of life. The condition is progressive and will cause the affected hip to have inflammation, pain and arthritis. The condition can be made worse by strenuous exercise such as sitting up, lying down or climbing stairs. The condition affects males and females equally. Either one or both hips can be affected. Hip dysphasia is a condition that is inherited from the parent dogs. Despite the high occurrence of hip dysphasia the Siberian Husky is one of the least affected dog breeds. Out of one hundred fourteen dog breeds affected by the condition the Siberian Husky is ranked one hundred eleventh. When it comes to Siberian Husky health problems this can be easily avoided by only buying from breeders who can prove that both parents have passed the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals standards for breeding.
Dogs can be affected by many eye defects, however only three of them are considered a concern among the few Siberian Husky health problems today. If you have a Siberian Husky the three eye conditions that you should be aware of are hereditary or juvenile cataracts, corneal dystrophy and progressive retinal atrophy. Each disorder affects a different portion of the eye and can be present in any eye color. While Siberian Husky eye problems don’t happen often they are very serious and you should never overlook or underestimate them. As early as three months of age a Siberian Husky can develop hereditary or juvenile cataracts. The condition can cause between a decrease in eyesight in mild cases to complete blindness in severe cases. The outer transparent portion of the eyeball can be affected by corneal dystrophy. It is often found in young adult dogs and is more common in females. There is no current treatment for this condition, however vision is seldom affected. Progressive retinal atrophy is a serious condition that can cause devastating loss of vision by as early as five months of age and is more common in males.

To prevent health problems from developing in your dog you need to practice proper Siberian Husky care. In some cases it may be necessary to seek emergency care for your Siberian Husky in order to keep them healthy.

When doing a Pomeranian hair cut you first want to start by washing your Pomeranian. The most important thing is to make sure you don’t get water in the eyes, nose or ears when washing your Pomeranian. To protect the ears from water you can place cotton balls in the ears. Once you have bathed your Pomeranian you can towel dry them before gently blow drying. While blow drying you should use a soft slicker brush and brush the hair in the direction of the head. You can either buy a dryer specifically for dogs or you can choose to use a human hair dryer, just be sure to use it on the low heat setting otherwise you can aggravate the skin and dry out the hair.

Then when it comes time to do the Pomeranian hair cut you want to start with the head and specifically the ear tips. This can be hard since you don’t want to cut the actual ear. The best way to prevent this is by pinching the ear leather between your fingers so they act as a protective barrier.
Cut at a horizontal angle when trimming the tips of the ears, to do this make sure your scissors are parallel to the dogs eyes while you are cutting. On your second cut make a slightly tilted angle. This will provide the ears with a softer angle that keeps the ears from looking too pointy. Next you should brush the hair around the head towards the front of the dog. Cut away any excess hair you see in order to give a circular shape when viewed from the front.

When doing a Pomeranian hair cut it is a good idea to have your fingers as guides just in case the Pomeranian decides to suddenly leap forward. The next step is to brush all the chest hair up and trim it at an angle that points towards the knee to give the dog a tidy appearance. This also provides the Pomeranian with a standard circular appearance when looked at from the side.
Next you should move on to the body. Trims the hair underneath in a semi-circular shape while viewing the dog from the side. Start the Pomeranian hair cut about one third up the back of the front leg and then continue in a semi-circular shape until you end about one third of the way up the back leg. You can adjust the cut in order to fit the length of your dog’s legs. At the same time trim away any excess hair that is sticking out of the midriff. For the tail you should trim around the base to give a tidy shape. Then twist the end of the tail and hold it straight up the dogs back. Cut the length wherever you think it will lay best.

The last step in a Pomeranian hair cut is to trim away hair on the feet that causes the rabbit foot look. You will also need to trim underneath the feet which requires you to place the dog on their back since this provides the most control over the dog and scissors.

The tedious task of a hair cut is included inPomeranian grooming. You can get the perfect hair cut for your dog with Pomeranian grooming tips.

Sometimes when you look at a Shih Tzu cut you wonder if that hair cut represents the personality and preferences of the owner or the dog. If you spend enough time with your Shih Tzu you will start to see their own little personality coming through and since they are the ones that have to wear the hair cut then maybe the hair cut should represent them a little as well as it represents you.

You do have some standard rules that need to be followed when it comes to grooming your Shih Tzu and these have to be followed because they affect your dog’s health. Always keep the hair around the eyes trimmed as long hair in the eyes drives a Shih Tzu crazy and can cause an unhealthy infection. Keep the hair short in the summer and long in the winter to help avoid any unnecessary exposure to the elements. The long hair may look great in July but it is unhealthy for your dog.
You can get some great ideas for Shih Tzu cuts from pictures on the Internet. The internet is a great resource for just about anything you need and there are sites out there run by every day Shih Tzu owners that show some of their hair cut ideas. And then there are the websites hosted and updated by professional groomers. You will find a lot of great ideas on the Internet for your Shih Tzu cut.

Try and picture a cut on your Shih Tzu before you actually start cutting. Remember that even though their hair grows fast they still have to live with a bad cut for a few months so be gentle with them. Unfortunately there really isn’t any software you can load on your computer that can help you preview a cut but there are a lot of pictures of Shih Tzu cuts out there and you can get a really good idea of what your dog will look like.
Your Shih Tzu dig’s coat is a lot like the top of your head in that your dog’s coat is made of hair and not fur. So you may want to consider blow-drying Shih Tzu cuts to prevent the hair from matting and getting clumped. Any kind of matting of the hair not only ruins the effect of the Shih Tzu cut but can also be unhealthy for the dog. Start at the back of the dog with low heat and move towards the front. Always brush your dog while you dry it.

Everyone loves to save a couple of bucks by doing it himself or herself, but when it comes to your dog’s cut you may want to consider a professional. A professional will not only get you the cut you want with no harm to your dog but they will also have some great ideas for you to consider, as you will still be able to decide on exactly what hair cut is perfect for your Shih Tzu dog.

You will find useful Shih Tzu grooming information in this article and in many dog breed specific books. This article contains some very useful Shih Tzu haircut tips.
