As with all dog breeds, the Yorkshire Terrier has special characteristics which require some special needs in order to maintain good Yorkshire Terrier health. While the breed generally has an excellent disposition they are very spirited and can sometimes be very noisy so consider your neighbors before choosing to bring this dog breed home.

When it comes to caring for your Yorkshire Terrier you need to spend some time on grooming and bathing. Since Yorkie’s have long coats you will need to bathe them and trim their hair short in order to maintain convenience and hygiene. To keep the long hair free of tangles you want to brush their hair daily and bathe them when they are dirty, which is usually once a week. If you have a male then urine will collect on the side of the body and you will need to wash this area daily with a damp cloth and warm water. Use a small hair dryer and brush the dog dry in front if possible.
Another important aspect of Yorkshire Terrier health is to wash the mucus from the corners of the dog’s eyes, even if you need to do this on a daily basis. To do this you should use a cloth or wad of cotton that is soaked in warm water. Leaving the mucus can allow your pet’s hair to rot. After washing the eyes carefully dry off the dog.

It is equally important that you make sure the hair around the anus is kept clean. This hair will quickly become matted with feces if it isn’t regularly kept clean. The top third of the earflaps should be regularly trimmed to avoid excessive hair growth. If not the excessive hair can weight down the ear before it can firmly set which happens at about six months of age.

During the cold weather it is a good idea to purchase a dog coat for your Yorkshire Terrier. Since this breed doesn’t have an undercoat to keep them work a store-bought coat can help to keep them warm.
Another important part of maintaining good Yorkshire Terrier health is to regularly check your dogs ears for excessive wax and mites. You will want the veterinarian to periodically pluck the hair from the inside of the ears. Occasionally you will also need to trim the hair on their feet.

You will also want to place focus on their eyes and teeth as well. Make sure the long hair is kept out of their eyes. Since Yorkie’s are prone to tartar buildup as a toy breed then regular brushing is important. You can get some good ideas on dental products and methods for brushing from your veterinarian.

Since the Yorkie doesn’t eat a lot it is important to give them a healthy and good quality food. Keep an eye on your Yorkie when outside or around other dogs since their tolerance for other dogs is low. The Yorkie is always ready for a spirited argument despite their small size. If you take good care of your Yorkshire Terrier then you can expect them to live a long healthy fifteen years or more.

Yorkshire Terrier care means you need to focus on the outside as well as the inside of your dog. It is also important that you find the best Yorkshire Terrier diet.
