The long coated German Shepherd is not considered show standard by the American Kennel Club and, therefore, is not allowed to compete in national competitions. The owners of the long coated German Shepherds could really care less whether their dogs win trophies because they already have decided that they have the best dogs on the planet. A long coated German Shepherd is absolutely beautiful to behold and has a much sweeter temperament then their short haired cousins. They also tend to be more comical then the shorthaired variety which really endears them to the public. They are great at assistance work, make exceptional working dogs and do quite well with police work. The long coated German Shepherd makes a great pet and they love kids. Only ten percent of German Shepherd pups are the long coated variety which makes them hard to find. Since the American Kennel Club only approves of the short coated German Shepherd so most breeders do not breed the long coated variety.
The biggest difference between the long coated German Shepherd and the short haired German Shepherd is the length of the coat. The long coated German Shepherd simply has longer hair. There are distinct characteristics that the long coated German Shepherd’s hair has which is different to a short hair, but the biggest difference is the longer coat. A long coated German Shepherd’s hair is very soft and parts along the back of the dog. There are ear tufts and fringe and long hair between the toes of a long coated German Shepherd and they have big bushy tails and huge pantaloons. It’s easy to spot a long coated German Shepherd puppy because of the ear tufts and fringe. Long coated German Shepherds also do not have undercoats, which does not make them waterproof and one of the main reasons the American Kennel Club will not allow them to be registered. Long coated German Shepherds also do not shed as much as the shorthaired German Shepherds.
When looking for a good family pet, a long coated German Shepherd should be on top of your list. They are almost the outcast of their breed which in some ways makes them the runts of their litter and who can’t help but love the runt of the litter. Long coated German Shepherds are very gentle, soft and large animals. They are funny in their own canine comical way and are very sweet dogs. They adore affection and give back as much as they get. Just because this dog is not waterproof should not deter you from considering it for a family pet.
They are smart and work with assisted living patients. They are great police dogs and they are very good working dogs. All of these references add up to a total package of a good, smart, well-rounded and extremely capable dog. Don’t let a silly thing like not belonging to the American Kennel Club stop you from owning the best dog in the world.
