With domesticated pets, controlling the population is just an easy thing to do:it’s just as simple as removing the possibility of conception until the opportunity for it has come to pass. But unlike breeding other pets, reproducing koi is quite different. The fact is that it does not matter whether you want them or not, but they will always lay and spawn eggs, as others will also fertilize theirs.

Now, since methods of contraception are not available for your fish, you may resolve this by removing those unwanted baby fish after they’ve been born. Although this method might seem harsh, always remember that keeping all the baby fish that are born can impose danger to both your pond and the parent fish too!

Now, what makes the baby fish harmful? First, it has something to do with the size that they could grow into. They will grow up to 3 feet long, and this doesn’t matter of what kind of habitat they’re being placed into. Now, an overpopulation of this will turn a beautiful koi pond into a wasteful and overfilled ones!

Having too many fish will damage a smaller koi pool, and the fish themselves will feel uncomfortable with their environment. In setting up your koi pool, have a filtration system for a specific number of fish. Adding extra amounts of fish without adding more system to your koi pool will produce harmful gases and chemicals that will impose danger to them.

How do you get rid of the baby fish? There are several ways of doing this. First is to stop feeding your fish the moment you realize that spawning has already taken place. Don’t worry about them starving, because it is in their nature to focus more on natural foods if they don’t get fed by their owners daily.

Now, this “natural diet” also includes their young. Although they’re not cannibals, they eat their young when they are still eggs or if they look like little insects, and they will only stop feeding until they see their young looking like real fish. This is why it is important for you to start this process as soon as you observe that spawning has occurred.

Another way to do this is by giving the unwanted baby fish away. You can check with your local pet store and see if they have programs that accept unwanted animals and give them good shelter. Some of these stores may even pay a certain amount of money for each fish since they will sell them (but just don’t count on this).

You can also look for local zoos that have this kind of program as well. If you know any local Koi society, you can give them notification that you have unwanted babies. You can also find an online message board or group wherein you can post your messages and notifications there.

In reality, reproducing koi and having them as pets is a fun hobby, but you should always make sure that you take care of them properly by monitoring their population in the koi pool all the time.
