Small dogs are all the rage for those that live the glamorous life. The smaller the dog, the more fashionable it seems. One of the breeds that have become so popular is Yorkshire Terriers. They are very small to begin with, don’t need a lot of exercise and are quite portable. Twenty years ago, they didn’t crack the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) top ten most popular purebred dogs in America. In 2006, Yorkshire Terriers came in at number two.
This popularity has been both a blessing and a curse for Yorkshire Terrier puppies. Although this has caused a demand from legitimate, responsible Yorkie breeders, it also has created a lot of Yorkies for sale from questionable sources. Yorkshire Terrier puppies are one of the most favored “products” from puppy mills, which blight America, because of their small size and high price. The puppy mills supply all pet stores that offer Yorkies for sale.
The bad news is that most places that advertise Yorkies for sale get their puppies from these inhumane puppy mills. These places include all pet stores and all Internet ads that will ship the puppy to you and do not ask you any questions other than your method of payment. Often, there will be signs in front of farms saying “Yorkies for Sale” and you will walk directly into a puppy mill. Please report them to the proper authorities if you come across such a foul place.
The good news is that Yorkies for sale can be found from licensed breeders all across the country. If you specifically want a purebred Yorkshire Terrier puppy, these are the best places to go to. These breeders only have a few Yorkies for sale each year, as their kennels and breeding operations are run out of their homes. The fewer the number of dogs in a kennel, the more individual care they get.
But are you looking at Yorkies for sale because you want a companion? In that case, you should go to your local animal shelter or a Yorkshire Terrier breed rescue group. You probably will not get papers with your dog, but you will find purebred Yorkshire Terrier puppies and adults. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that twenty-five percent of all dogs abandoned are purebreds.
Most of the time, these dogs are abandoned through no fault of the dog. They are there because their previous owners did not take the time to learn basic Yorkshire Terrier puppy care. They most likely bought the puppy on impulse, especially since they are so fashionable now, and didn’t realize what they were getting into. There are even puppies as young as six months old are given up because of ignorance on the part of the owner. But adults are usually already neutered and (for the most part) housebroken. They need extensive grooming, which turns a lot of previous owners off.
You can find hundreds of published articles on dogs, including many on Yorkshire Terrier puppies. There would be fewer abandoned Yorkies if people knew basic Yorkshire Terrier puppy care.
